Das Aufstellen von Kürbissen in den Vorgärten hat bei uns in DE schon länger Tradition, mancherorts werden zum Erntedankfest sogar Kürbisfeste veranstaltet. In den letzten Jahren haben die Geschäftsleute vermehrt „Halloween“ als neue Geschäftsidee entdeckt. So gibt es mittlerweile Halloweenkostüme, -süßigkeiten, -parties und dergleichen mehr. Alles schön und gut, aber nicht mit dem zu toppen, was sich hier in den USA diesbezüglich abspielt. Alle Supermärkte haben reihenweise Gänge mit Süßigkeiten und die Superstores dazu noch Kostüme, abgesehen von den Halloween Shops, die saisonweise geöffnet haben. Mittlerweile haben viele Amerikaner ihre Eingänge, Briefkästen und Vorgärten entsprechend dekoriert. Zwei Anwesen in den Wohnsiedlungen von Cape Coral sind uns besonders aufgefallen und wir sind fassungslos begeistert.

An einem Eckgrundstück an der Kreuzung Academy Blvd. / SE 23 Ter. in Cape Coral. Diese Figuren werden zu bestimmten Tageszeiten elektrisch aufgepumpt und zu unbestimmter Zeit wird die Luft abgelassen; haben diesen Tipp zum Anschauen schon weitergegeben, doch leider trafen unsere Bekannten immer ein, wenn die Figuren schon wieder platt auf dem Rasen lagen.

Ein „Haunted House“ befindet sich, vom Cultural Park Blvd. kommend, 526 SE 2nd St. In Cape Coral; Hinweisschilder gibt es schon oben an der Pine Island Rd. Der Eigentümer hat sein Haus und zusammen mit seinem Nachbarn die beiden Vorgärten ziemlich makaber „dekoriert“. Wir waren das erste Mal gegen 18:00 Uhr an den beiden Grundstücken und hatten gerade noch genug Fotolicht. Der Besitzer stand im Eingang und forderte uns auf, doch alles in Ruhe anzuschauen und der Spaß an seinem Werk war ihm sichtlich anzusehen; fünfundachtzig Stunden hat der ganze Halloween-Zauber an Zeit gekostet. Was denn seine Nachbarn von dem Ganzen halten, wollen wir wissen: "They like it." Am Wochenende wird das Ganze mit Licht, Rauch und Geräuschen untermalt, wir kommen aber noch mehr als einmal wieder. Was hier wohl an Weihnachtsdeko geboten wird?

So, der Shopping-Room ist abgeschmückt, die Koffer sind fast gepackt und morgen geht der Flieger wieder rückwärts. Wir hatten eine schöne Zeit, niemand von uns beiden oder den lieben Daheimgebliebenen ist krank geworden, was eine Rückreise erfordert hätte und so sind wir wieder einmal dankbar.

Mein kleiner bebilderter Reisebericht ist noch nicht zu Ende und wird von zu Hause fortgesetzt.

Danke für die guten Reisewünsche, sind wieder zu Hause und genießen zufrieden die herbstliche Stimmung.
Die ersten Gelüste nach 8 Wochen habe ich schon gestillt: Tilsiter Käse.

Präsidentschaftswahl in den USA

Was an Wahlveranstaltungen im TV geboten wird, bekommen wir nicht mit; die Fernsehduelle via Internet natürlich schon. Wahlplakate, wie wir es vor Wahlen in DE kennen, sind hier in Lee County nicht zu entdecken. An großen, freien Kreuzungen stecken hin und wieder Wahltafeln, in den Vorgärten wird auf kleinen Schildern für den Wunschkandidaten geworben, dieser heißt hier überall Romney, Obama kommt nicht vor, höchstens NObama.

Und manch einer wirbt persönlich mit Schildern auf der Straße. Am Del Prado Blvd. ist es am Samstagmorgen bei starkem Straßenverkehr nicht einfach, mal eben ein Foto von den Werbern zu machen; so fahren wir auf einen Parkplatz, knipsen unsere Bilder und fahren zum nächsten Parkplatz, um ein Bild von vorne zu bekommen. Die beiden Romney-Anhänger haben ihre Aktion eben gerade abgeschlossen, wer weiß, wie lange sie schon in der prallen Sonne gestanden haben. Auf freundliches Anfragen sind sie sofort bereit, für uns zu posieren und zum Abschluss rufen sie uns „Vote Romney!“ zu.

Durch Zufall, weil ich eine Geburtstagskarte verschicken möchte, entdecke ich im Wal*Mart Super Center eine Wand mit Wahl – Grußkarten für $2,74 das Stück, auf denen Obama bzw. Romney abgelichtet sind: so kann man jemanden einen Gruß mit dem Hinweis schicken, diesen oder jenen Kandidaten zu wählen.

Im Sommer hat das http://www.texasroadhouse.com/]Texas Roadhouse[/url] neu aufgemacht, das ist ein Kettenrestaurant und im rustikalen Holzstil gebaut. Am späten Nachmittag war das Lokal bereits bruchvoll. Während des Essens bot das Servicepersonal nach dem Einspielen einer Erkennungsmelodie eine Tanz-Show-Einlage, war ganz lustig und da kann man mal hingehen.
